Research Focus and Projects

The successful applicant will work closely with Dr. Brennan Ferguson, a leading expert in the transport of radionuclides in the environment. Two research assistantships are available, each offering a thrilling project:

  1. Selective Sorbents for Groundwater Remediation: Test and evaluate selective sorbents for iodine and strontium for use in a permeable reactive barrier aimed at remediating contaminated groundwater.
  2. Effect of Organic Matter on Contaminant Sorption: Investigate the impact of organic matter on contaminant sorption to minerals, contributing to a deeper understanding of environmental processes.

Location and Timeline

  • Anticipated Start Date: Fall 2024 (summer start date negotiable)
  • Initial 9 months: University of Georgia’s main campus in Athens, GA for coursework
  • Subsequent period: Aiken, SC, at the Savannah River Ecology Laboratory, located on the 200,000-acre Savannah River Site, providing a unique field site experience.

Qualifications (No GRE)

  • Bachelor’s degree in Geology, Environmental Science, Chemistry, or related field.
  • Proficient in English (TOEFL: overall score of 80, with at least 20 in speaking and writing; IELTS: overall band width of 6.5, with no single band score below 6.0).
  • Valid US driver’s license within 9 months of appointment and means of transportation.
  • Comfortable working in both lab and field settings.
  • Commitment to publishing peer-reviewed scientific articles and presenting research at conferences.
  • Preference given to applicants with undergraduate research experience.
