Hundreds rendered Homeless as Weija Floods

  • Post category:Sports

Hundreds of people have been displaced in the Greater Accra Region’s Ga South Municipality, with many more stranded in their homes as the Ashalaja, Weija, Oblogo, and Tetegu regions flood.

Videos emerging on social media show the current state of the residential area as the whole place is submerged under flood water.

Currently, boats are the only means of transportation to and from Weija, and the sad plight of the residents have no end in sight as the Weija Dam cannot be relocated, and a plan by the government to relocate the flood victims have proved futile due to their unwillingness to move.

Residents have described the situation as a disaster, with several homes nearly flooded.

To avoid drowning, some people have had to use canoes. They call the situation a crisis and according to them, the flood is as a result of the recent downpour and the subsequent overflow of the Weija Dam

In an interview by JoyNews reporters, residents expressed their displeasure with the state of affairs as they lamented their woes.

“This extends from the Weija dam.” We heard that there was an overflow at Nsawam, and whenever this happens, folks in Weija, Oblogo, and Tetegu are the victims since there would undoubtedly be a flood.

The flood began on Sunday evening but is now at a very high level, forcing many inhabitants to flee their houses.

“We believed it would go down because it was coming slowly on Sunday evening.” Then it got too much this morning, and we had to leave our various homes… There is still some debris in the houses. It happens all the time, but not to this extent,” a resident said.

“I think it’s extremely dangerous at this moment because I’ve witnessed the water reach a new level,” another resident said.

The area, which is fast developing into a luxurious residential area has been in the news several times for flooding associated to the spillage of the Weija Dam and consistent earthquakes that plague the area.

Concerns have been raised by many officials of NADMO as the flooding issue at Weija has become an annual occurrence.
