PhD Fellowship at University of Copenhagen, Denmark

  • Post category:Job Vacancy

Introduction

The Department of Biology, Section of Microbiology, invites applications for a PhD fellowship to study social interactions in the plant root microbiome. The project, expected to commence on August 1, 2024, or as soon as possible thereafter, aims to unravel the ecological factors controlling the establishment of a beneficial plant microbiome. The research will focus on the role of microbial interactions as key drivers for microbiome composition and activity, particularly emphasizing interspecies cooperation/competition and the resulting priority effects.

Research Focus

The PhD project will explore the hypothesis that microbial communities are composed of collaboromes, microscale focal points of interdependent bacteria showing essential microbe-microbe interactions. These collaboromes are believed to have emergent properties that significantly benefit plant growth and health. The investigation aims to enhance our understanding of the ecological and evolutionary aspects shaping complex plant root microbiomes.

Eligibility

We seek a highly motivated and ambitious individual with the following qualifications:

sponsored
  • Solid theoretical background in plant-microbiome interactions
  • Practical experience with techniques in microbiology and molecular biology
  • Interest in bioinformatics and/or bioimaging (considered advantageous)
  • MSc degree in Plant Biology, Microbiology, Bioinformatics, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, or a related field
  • Good English skills
  • Demonstrated interpersonal and communication skills

Qualifications

  • Professional qualifications relevant to the PhD project
  • Relevant publications (if any)
  • Work experience in the field
